Motherhood Exaggerated by Judith Hannan - Review & Giveaway

I had the distinct pleasure of being able to review a book by Judith Hannan called Motherhood Exaggerated this month, just in time for Mother's Day. To learn more about Judith or her memoir, visit her website. This memoir was heartfelt and gut-wrenching at times, but was a testament of the importance of a mom being able to still celebrate small triumphs while fighting for the life of her daughter, Nadia.

Motherhood Exaggerated by Judith Hannan is anything BUT what I expected. It is one of three memoirs that I have read and of those, it is one of three that I have enjoyed!

When I agreed to do a review of this book and then immediately though, "Oh, no! I'm going to have to read a sad book now!" (I'm notorious for turning down even the classics if they are too sad.) I was so pleasantly surprised by this memoir though! From the surprising discovery of the problem, to the author putting the pieces together--the signs she wonders if she would have questioned sooner--to the struggle through diagnosis and her motherly roles, this book was a well-written, eloquently worded read. Hannan uses candor when writing about the entire experience, thus making it real and familiar, even to those readers without having experienced a personal encounter with cancer.

This book is so elegantly written, every chapter was woven together neatly with a thread of gold. I generally skim everything leading up to the first words of the first chapter--even the Introduction and Forward had my attention from the start. I really love that the author has a journal entry with date for each chapter as it starts--it helps to validate the entire journey and makes the chronicling more real for the reader, as if you are solving a mystery, and because you know what the eventual outcome will be.

My heart goes out to Judith and Nadia and and everyone that has or is battling the wretched disease today. I would recommend this to those struggling. Those that need hope.

  1. WOW! You were right.. I read some of the excerpt.. I skipped down to the sad part of the tumor and how the whole climate of the book changed. I couldn't have imagined what was going on through Judith's mind when she had to make such tough decisions for such a major surgery.

  2. I learned her essays have appeared in such publications as Woman’s Day, Twins Magazine, The Martha’s Vineyard Gazette, Mom Writer’s Literary Magazine, The Healing Muse, and the anthology On The Vineyard III.

  3. I learned the author has been writing for 25 years.
