Healthy Child Healthy Worldinforms people to make greener, healthier choices for families to thrive in a healthier way. One adorable little girl (Collette, the daughter of founders, Nancy and James Chuda) was the catalyst for this initiative--a great one to help get the word out about environmental toxins, the dangers related to children's diseases and deaths, and how we can change the outlook. They are all about getting the information out there to parents and families to be used and so everyone is knowledgeable about their choices. They promote protective policies that keep our families safe. This is extremely important--not only to parents of children, but parents TO-BE also! A pregnant woman needs to be well-informed on all of the potentially hazardous environmental toxins and other ingestibles that could harm her unborn baby. Childhood cancers can sometimes be avoided by taking some additional measures in prenatal care.

Healthy Child Healthy Worldis definitely worth your time. Take a look around. Learn something. Something that I learned was that "evidence is linking everyday environmental contaminants to asthma, learning disabilities, obesity, cancer and more." That fact is a great reminder to try harder to be healthier.  Healthy Child strives to make the scientific findings accessable and understandable to the public and helps to inspire parents and caregivers to make healthy environments for becoming healthier families.

Maybe you'll be able to find a way to change your life for the better. Maybe you'll make your home environment safer for your family. I know I will be changing a few things. There are several easy ways to make healthy changes. Below are a few things that I'm going to change.

I plan to try my luck with houseplants again. We have terrible lighting and I am cursed with a 'black thumb,' however, I've known for quite some time that houseplants help to filter the indoor air--which can be worse than outdoor air sometimes! Yikes! Another thing I always consider when trying to find perfect houseplants is toxicity of the plants themselves if ingested. Make sure to find out what is safe to grow around children and pets! This is one very simple task you can complete to get closer to a healthy life.

Another tactic I'm trying (and it's harder than I thought!) is to eat better. Certified organic is a GREAT start. You know what is frightening to me? ORGANIC in today's world was simply FOOD in my grandparents world. So even though buying organic foods is helpful, it's even better to grow your own! Look into maximizing urban space for gardening or, if you are blessed like my family to have land to sow, grow a beautiful, healthy garden! So much of our food choices today are saturated with pesticides, hormones, and preservatives! Try eating things with the least amount of ingredients possible! Don't eat what you cannot pronounce! And remember, research! Some companies "buy" their organic status, so make sure it is a credible source. USDA Organic and Rainforest Alliance are two good ones.

When I was pregnant I was a toxins nazi. I spent half of my pregnancy reading labels and googling the safety of certain products. But you know what? I'm GLAD that I was a little crazy. I went so far as to hold my breath as I walked by the nail salon in the mall. I had 4" roots from my old hair color. I switched shampoos to paraben-free. I didn't eat any nitrates. Guess what? I had a beautiful, healthy baby boy! I attribute my mission as a healthy incubator to alot of his health and wellness, even today. But, what I sometimes forget is that this "craziness" should translate to life post-baby! Why should I go back to using toxic shampoo, make-up, or cleaners now? So, I'm greening up my cleaners and all other areas that I have some control over. If you don't like to pay for green cleaners or don't think they work, there are always the "old" remedies like vinegar!

The last simple change that we are slowly making is getting rid of our BPA-ridden plastics. We use Pyrex containers for cooking and storage. There has been a pretty good movement in the BPA-free products by marketers these days, but it's still a good idea to check for yourself. Glass is safe! Try not to heat food using plastic. Don't reuse disposable water bottles. If possible, get yourself a safe drinking vessel that you can reuse--it's healthier and more earth-friendly! While you are greening up your kitchen, get rid of your aluminum non-stick pans and use something else like cast iron or glass.

There you have it. Easy ways to make your home and life safer and greener. You can sleep more soundly when you know that you've tried to decrease the likelihood of your family coming in regular contact with avoidable environmental contaminants. You can make your house a haven.
