The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

I felt this was important enough to share. At least for me it was profoundly true and yet so hard to remember!
The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else--the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first--the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Like Mother, Like Daughter {hand-stamped jewelry} - Fall in Love with Handmade Giveaway Hop

Like Mother, Like Daughter {hand-stamped jewelry} is run by--you guessed it! A mother-daughter team! Karen and Kaitlin are the talented ladies behind the Etsy shop that produces super heart-felt, gorgeous, personalized jewelry and accessories. They are a stylish and super-trendy sponsor of the Fall in Love with Handmade hop, so show some love!

They used sterling silver, copper, and brass discs to create an absolutely heart-melting piece for me!

Forgive me, on the bottom metal disk, it's copper colored, I did edit my son's particulars from the piece before posting it, but you can have the discs say whatever you'd like! It's so neat! I wear it near my heart each day. I do take it off for Zumba and running so it doesn't get sweaty or ruined--you should store these beauties in a dry, air-tight place, to prevent or slow tarnishing. But--if it DOES tarnish, you can just polish it up again!

There are SO many different styles that are just adorable and great for any occasion! There are "funkier" necklaces that I loved, including one that is a "Tree of Life" for the hipsters out there! You can make grandma a pendant with birthstone charms or a "mother's necklace" like I made. If you have more than one kiddo, that one is perfect, you can have each child's name stamped on the different tiers of metals!
You can find these crafty gals on Facebook and on Twitter. Not only do they make sweet "mother's necklaces" they make a variety of great jewelry and accessories! Their Etsy shop is filled to the brim with fun, fashionable jewelry and accessories. There is definitely something for everyone!

Can't you just see this head band on a little girl for her first halloween?

Here is another photo from the Like Mother, Like Daughter Etsy store, this is what a stamp actually looks like! There are several similar photos that you can check out....I would LOVE to see a piece being made. It would be so neat!
This is one of my favorite pieces--it's the funky "tree of life" stamped metal disc that I mentioned before. I could see a lot of earth-mamas really enjoying this one. But, it also speaks to those geneology enthusiasts! It could be a really treasured piece of jewelry in the family, passed down even!
I love you to the moon and back is another great one that you'll see an example of in the shop and it's so heart-warming! You could put any short phrase that is familiar and customary in your family onto jewelry! The moon with round discs and gems just makes a completely loving scene to dangle around a lucky persons neck to remind them of loved ones always!
Don't all of these photos of great potential additions to your jewelry collection just call out to you? Well, you have the awesome opportunity, thanks to Karen's generosity, to WIN a 3-tiered necklace like the one she made for me for the Fall in Love with Handmade Giveaway Hop! You can BUY any of the pieces you've seen here or see in the Etsy store, by starting a conversation with the gals at Like Mother, Like Daughter {hand stamped jewelry} and they can make something for you that is truly your own. No piece from them is like another. Every one is unique, just like all of us! Make sure to tell Karen where you are coming from and also THANK YOU for sponsoring!

Why Buy When You Can Rent!?! Campus Book Rentals -- For the Clever Student!

Back to School... It's that time of year. The time of year when your bank account really take a hit! You need to buy clothing, supplies, food, and all sorts of things to kick off a new school year! Many are unemployed during undergraduate school--or have a super part-time work study job. So, funds are in short supply. There is one area where it's easy and practical to cut corners! Campus Book Rentals can help you save big this semester!

If you're like me, you purchased your textbooks from the on-site campus bookstore. You tried to find USED books, but they were still spendy and generally the edition of the testbook was renewed THAT year, so used books wouldn't work anyway. That always happened to me. I also thought that I would keep these great textbooks (that I barely bothered reading while IN the class) to read for future reference. In my SPARE time. Guess what? They are still collecting dust on my bookshelf and are now incredibly outdated. It's been 10 years for some of them...still haven't done any "light reading" or found any sparetime!! So my advice? Don't waste your money on purchasing.

SAVE as much as 40-90% by RENTING from Campus Book Rentals! They offer FREE shipping BOTH ways! That is virtually unheard of these days! So, let's get this straight--you save half or better on the book AND don't pay shipping.

You can also highlight in the book with no worries! The rental timeframe is super flexible--Campus Book Rentalsrealizes that not every university has the same finals/in-class schedule. No sweat.

All of you readers know that I love to highlight businesses and organizations that do charitible work. Well, Campus Book Rentals donates to Operation Smile with each textbook rented! Operation Smile helps children all over the world fix cleft lip, cleft palate, and other facial deformities with surgical care they could otherwise not afford.

Here is a book that I remember paying over $100 for when I was studying Ornithology in college. I WISH I had known about this place when I was there! And, I do plan to go this route when I go back for my M.S.! I still have this book, and when I was a district Ornithologist in Alaska, it did make me feel cool to have a few "professional-looking" books on my desk, BUT, I would have felt cooler with HUNDREDS more dollars in my bank account! What do they ask for a semester price on Campus Book Rentals? $27 and some change! That's so ridiculous!!! Check out the difference by clicking here: Ornithology textbook from Campus Rentals Price. Here is the same book on Amazon (and somehow when you buy from your alma mater they REALLY jack up the price even more!)

So, be smart this school year! Rent your texts! Help out another human being with each rental!

*Please note this is a sponsored post, but all opinions are 100% mine and my experience with the Ornithology book is 100% true!!*

Jan Luc Designs Sponsor Spotlight & Review

I know most of you probably hate swim suit shopping. It's something that only 15 year old girls and hard-body fitness fanatics could love. Right? Even if you have an uber toned body or love swimsuit shopping, there aren't a lot of modest options! Everything is the size of a bandaid with a few strings and sparkles. While this might be fine for Sports Illustrated or Maxim, it's not going to fly at the local family beach! (or even in my bathroom, by myself! haha) So, I searched for a better option and found Jan Luc Designs!

Dina, the New Jersey mama behind the label decided to take matters of modesty into her own hands. She had the same issues with retail swimwear that I have and she happens to be a talented sewing guru! So (or should I say SEW) she developed these amazing rashguard/capri swim sets. She shopped the fabric district of New York for fun, fashionable, high quality swim fabrics. I love what she's found!

The swim sets include the top and pull-on, elastic waist bottoms--but can have a matching swim cap ordered along with it! They are not included in the set, however.

These sets are handmade in U.S.A. The material used is four-way stretch nylon spandex. All seams are professionally finished with a serger. I don't feel like I will have to replace this set anytime soon! They are super sturdy material but highly comfortable too!

Care instructions: machine wash delicate in cold water, line dry. The sets fit a little loose--which I love. When it's wet, it does cling to me a little more, but all swim suits do! If you like a snug fit, order a size smaller that what you normally wear. Dina can even make custom sizes with your specific measurements for a small charge. Please note - there is no built in bra. I wear my set over a one piece speedo that I love. It makes me feel a little bit "flattened out," so if you want to keep your womanly curves while wearing this, put on a bikini/bra top underneath. That is a great think about this set--you CAN wear anything under it but still feel comfortable going anywhere!

Here is a photo of another option of pattern/color available from Jan Luc Designs!

This photo is to show a size Small fits on a more petite build. I found the sizes (those available are S, M , L) fit very true to size. I wear a large in everyday clothing--teeshirts, jeans are a 12, etc. and the swim set fit me perfectly in a size Large.

    Back view!

Here is a close-up of the fabric that my rashguard is made of. I chose to go with the black with tropical flowers since I figured everyone can "pull off" black and it may be more slimming than putting myself in a brighter color! I love the design/color I chose!

This is a first, well, a nearly first---full body shot of me, sans makeup and with my hair in a bun! But, I do love that even though I'm not in my best post-baby shape, this set is still more flattering and complementary than any suit I've worn for the last 3 years! You can see the stretch across the bust--if you wear a bikini top rather than a one-piece suit like I did, the material will not do this nearly as much. It was sliding up because all the slippery, flattening material underneath left no curves for the shirt to settle on! This is easily remedied.

I feel comfortable wearing this to yoga, fishing, sitting on the beach with my boy, and I'd wear it to the pool too, but I haven't yet since it's been so beautiful outside all summer!

I also feel like the money that you save in sunblock would pay for the outfit in one summer. That is, if you're like me and are pale, or if you care about your skin and use sunblock diligently! I use 3-4 full-size tubes each summer! With all of the extra coverage, not only do I have less of a chance of burning, I use less sunblock!

You can BUY a JanLuc Designs swim set and swim caps too! Visit the Jan Luc Designs
Etsy shop and have a look around! Order something that is truly fashionable and practical! Preserve your modesty and your style! You also have a great opportunity to WIN a set from JanLuc by visiting the Fall in Love with Handmade Giveaway Hop post! Make sure you tell Dina where you're coming from and send a big THANK YOU her way for being a super stylish sponsor for the event!

Oh The Post! - Fall in Love with Handmade Sponsor Spotlight

As I was spending hours the other night, perusing Etsy because I LOVE Etsy and the endless amount of creativity it holds, I found this cute Cardinal pendant! As I looked through the Oh! the Post! shop, I saw there were MANY very cool pendants. Well, Laura the friendly, ambitious and interesting owner and creator behind the shop was really generous and decided to sponsor a review AND giveaway for the event!

Laura lives in British Columbia, Canada and shares her talent with the world, through her shop -- Oh! the Post! We had a lot in common and so we ended up corresponding back and forth QUITE a bit! She's so nice and personable! She told me that she was in a postcard club for a while, and was able to get stamps from all over the world. I LOVE getting mail, so the thought of being in a postcard club was REALLY awesome to me! I've been looking into it, just to see the fun stamps and postcards from around the world. I kept a few from Costa Rica (and, I think most countries have beautiful stamps compared to ours in the states!) Canada has lovely wildlife stamps. Laura has a stately looking grizzly and a beaver from Canada that were also catching my eye!

Laura also has a cool story to go with most of her stamps. She goes to flea markets and sales and has a "stamp guy!" With movies out there like "The Lucky One" and others like it, wouldn't it be fun to have a pendant of a stamp that went across seas from a war veteran to his sweetheart while he was away or something romantic? Maybe a traveler with a wandelust that wrote home with each new country she was in? A stamp from a country before they changed their name (Burma & Myanmar!!) There are so many possibilities when it comes to stamps!

All of Laura's postage stamp creations are one of a kind. Some of them have great postmarked waves through them, most say what country they are from, and, if Laura knows the story behind it, she will divulge all of the great details! This handsome and regal cardinal is holding a tiny blueberry in his beak! I am a bird nerd through and through and I just love having this guy hanging around my neck! This is truly one of the most unique and fun pieces of jewelry I own! My toddler loves to pull on mommies jewelry, so I have to be careful with it, but it's very sturdy and well made.

I cannot believe some of the great stamps from so many places that Laura has turned into wearable art! You have to go look at Oh the Post! and see all of her great items! Make sure you add her to your favorites on Etsy! She is such an inspirational gal--making beautiful pendants with amazing adventures behind them! Exactly my kind of jewelry!
You can BUY your own pendant (or maybe even give Laura a stamp and see if she can do something special for you by communicating with her on her Oh the Post Etsy Page! You can also try your best to WIN a pendant from Laura's shop, by visiting the  Fall in Love with Handmade Giveaway Hop! Tell Laura that you found out about her fantastic creations from Amanda at Adventures of Mommyhood and make sure to tell her THANKS! for being a super stellar sponsor!

Totes With A Twist - Fall in Love With Handmade - Sponsor Spotlight & Review

One of my truly friendly and trendy sponsors for the Fall in Love with Handmade hop is Totes with a Twist, owned and operated by Susan & Antonella. They are fellow mamas, with several children between the two of them, and they are also the crafy creators of these really amazing upcycled sails!

Here is the front of my beautiful Sail Anew ditty bag.
Now, being in the midwest, we don't have a very big source of sails at all, but I've been dying to try a sail bag. These ladies have a great supply of sails living near the ocean -- and they make all sorts of interesting and fun wristlets, totes, and ditty bags (and more!) I recently got to try a ditty bag and it's so summery and fresh!

This is the back-side of the bag, where you see the Sail Anew emblem, sewn on and stamped.

I use it when I go the the gym (mostly) for my hairbrush, deodorant, and other supplies inside my gym bag. BUT, I also think that because it it so adorable, it needs to be shown off a little, so I also use it for carrying thing like my hotel key, car keys, sunglasses, and other small odds and ends like chapstick or a few treats for my son when we're poolside! I've taken this ditty bag to the beach and have used it as a "clutch-size" purse while out with the stroller!

This is a close-up showing the secure stitching and the anchor embellishment, and in the upper corner, a view of the super strong zipper!

The sail is cut and sew to make all of these great designs and shapes--and they come in several colors! They are just such a pretty addition to any occasion, but also they are quite practical! The sail repels water, so it's a great place to put your cell phone, ipod, and other keep-dry items while out on the boat! The inner part of the bag is waterproof, so it really is ideal for summer activities or if you're a pool-going family like we are, it's perfect for that too! It makes me feel like I finally have something not only green (it's a retired sail, repurposed) but also trendy and fashionable! Recycled sails are all the rage these days and I feel really smug when I'm at a lake resort and I have something with such character instead of my usual grocery bags or plain jane totes!

The mark of quality! None of the bags are quite like the others, so you have an original, everytime!

The bag is about 12"x10" and the embellished anchor is around 4" in size. The grommet that is in the corner of the ditty bag as well as the zipper are really sturdy and high-quality materials. The zipper isn't flimsy like some on backpacks, but the beefy kind that you know will last and last! As a mom, I am always running out of room for all of the things I need or might need when we go places, so having a versitile bag is really a must! I was never a diaper bag person, not wanting to have a giant bag in tow all the time, so I've always tried to find "cooler" bags to serve in the capacity of 'diaper bag' and I think recycled sail bags would be an excellent choice! I think you definitely achieve 'cool' mom status when you have one of these!

The zipper is really impressive. It's very smooth in function, but also very substantial and is the kind that will endure lots of use!
All of you know that I LOVE really original, unique things. I love when my posessions have a story to go with them! I can just imagine what this sail may have done, been, and experienced before coming to my home! Was it a racer? Did it see gnarly seas? Was it a leisurely cruiser? Did it sail into international waters and exotic places? I really think it would be interesting IF the history of the sail was known at all, to include that with the product--something simple like this sail has seen been from the Caicos to Cape Cod... Alternatively, it's fun to use your imagination too!
And here is a sweet little note, attached to each Sail Anew bag, from Susan and Antonella! I love this extra-personal touch! They are really personable women to work with!

They also have new items in the Sail Anew line, Hipsters and Blankets!! You have to check it out! There are so many amazing and beautiful items listed in their shop! Etsy is a great place to find so many gorgeous, handmade items! Go check out Totes with a Twist now and don't forget to show these two friendly gals some sponsor love, by liking the Totes with a Twist shop on Facebook!
